Privacy Policy

Your trust is important to us. This policy explains how Clario collects, uses, and protects your personal and financial data.

Dit document is momenteel alleen in het Engels beschikbaar.

Effective Date: March 24, 2026. Last Updated: October 6, 2026.

1. Introduction

Clario ("we", "our", "us") is a personal finance management application that helps you aggregate bank accounts, track spending, set savings goals, and receive AI-powered financial insights. This Privacy Policy describes what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and your rights regarding your data.

By using Clario, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app or website.

2. Data We Collect

We collect the following categories of data to provide and improve the Clario service:

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect:

  • Email address
  • First and last name
  • Password (stored as a one-way bcrypt hash — we never store your plain-text password)
  • Third-party sign-in identifiers if you use Apple Sign-In or Google Sign-In (Apple ID or Google ID only — we do not receive your Apple or Google password)

Financial Data

When you connect bank accounts or use the app, we collect:

  • Bank account details: account name, institution name, account type, last 4 digits of your card number, IBAN, and current/available balances
  • Transaction history: amounts, dates, merchant names, categories, merchant category codes (MCC), and payment channels
  • Budget information: monthly income, fixed expenses, and variable expenses you set up during onboarding
  • Savings goals ("Jars"): goal names, target amounts, current progress, and contribution history
  • Receipt images: photos of receipts you upload for expense tracking, along with extracted merchant name, items, and totals
  • Bank access tokens: encrypted credentials used to sync your accounts (encrypted with AES-256-CBC — see Security section)

AI Assistant, Memory & Voice Data

If you turn on Clario AI and use it, we also process:

  • Your chats with the AI assistant: the messages you send, the assistant's replies, and a rolling summary of each chat's older messages. They are stored with the chat so the assistant can answer follow-up questions, and you can delete a chat at any time.
  • AI memory: short facts you share about yourself that the assistant saves to personalise future answers, for example the shops you use, your household size, or a diet or allergy. You can view, delete and switch off memory in Settings → AI memory (see section 4).
  • Voice recordings: when you add a transaction by voice, the short recording is sent to OpenAI to be transcribed. We do not store the recording; only the transaction you confirm is saved.

Technical, Usage & Security Data

We also collect:

  • IP address and user agent string, used for security, rate limiting and abuse prevention. They appear in our server logs, which are kept for 30 days.
  • Country and language preferences you set in the app
  • Device push notification tokens, so we can send the notifications you turn on
  • App usage and crash data: pseudonymous events such as screens opened, app version, device model and crash reports (via Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics). These never include your balances or transactions.
  • Advertising attribution events: app install, app open and purchase events sent to Meta through its App Events SDK, so we can tell which ads bring new users. On iOS, your advertising identifier is used only if you allow tracking.
  • Website analytics: Google Analytics, only if you choose "Allow analytics" in the cookie banner, and Vercel Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies.

3. How We Use Your Data

  • Display your aggregated bank balances and transactions across all connected accounts
  • Generate AI-powered spending insights, savings tips, and financial health analysis
  • Power the AI Financial Assistant chat feature, which uses your financial context to answer your questions
  • Remember facts you choose to share with the AI assistant (AI memory) so its future answers fit you, while memory is switched on
  • Turn a voice note into a draft transaction that you review before it is saved
  • Process receipt images to automatically extract and categorize expenses
  • Manage your savings goals (Jars) and track progress toward targets
  • Verify your identity during signup and password reset via email verification codes
  • Confirm it's you with a one-time email code before you connect a bank
  • Manage your subscription and feature access (Free, Pro, Founder Lifetime)
  • Understand how the app is used, diagnose crashes and measure which of our ads bring new users
  • Keep the service secure, including rate limiting and preventing abuse

4. Third-Party Services

We share specific data with the following service providers to run Clario. We do not sell your personal or financial data, and we do not share your financial data for advertising.

OpenAI

Clario AI features stay off until you give explicit consent in the app, and our server refuses AI requests from accounts that have not consented. When you use the AI Financial Assistant or receive AI-generated insights, we send the financial context the request needs to OpenAI's API. This can include account balances, recent transactions (amounts, categories, merchant names), budget information and savings goals. For receipt scanning, we send the receipt image to OpenAI's Vision API. OpenAI processes this data to generate responses and does not use it to train its models (per its API data usage policy). We send the minimum data needed for each request, and you can withdraw your consent at any time in Settings. How we handle chat history, AI memory and voice input is described below.

AI assistant: chat history and long-term memory

Your chats are sent to OpenAI only after you give explicit AI consent in the app. To answer follow-up questions, each chat stores its conversation history and a rolling summary of its older messages, which is also written by an OpenAI model. Both are kept with the chat in our database until you delete the chat or your account, and the recent messages plus the summary are sent to OpenAI with each new message in that chat.

Long-term memory: the assistant may save short facts you share about yourself, such as the shops you use, your household size, or your diet or allergies, to personalise future answers, including in new chats. A diet or allergy can be health-related information, which the GDPR treats as a special category of personal data. To decide what to save, an OpenAI model also checks each message you send, and your saved facts are sent to OpenAI as part of your chat requests. The assistant is instructed not to save other health conditions, religion, political views, sexuality, or ID, card or account numbers. Memory keeps up to 30 facts; when it is full, the oldest are removed first.

Your controls: in Settings → AI memory you can see every saved fact, delete individual facts, clear them all, or switch memory off. Switching memory off stops new facts being saved and stops saved facts being sent with your chats; facts you already saved stay until you delete them. All memory facts are deleted with your account. The in-app data export does not include memory facts yet; you can request a copy at support@clarioapp.net.

Legal basis: we process your chats and memory facts on the basis of your consent. For health-related facts such as a diet or allergy, you give explicit consent by choosing to share them with the assistant while memory is on. You can withdraw it at any time by deleting those facts or switching memory off, and you can withdraw AI consent altogether in Settings. Withdrawing consent does not affect processing that took place before.

OpenAI does not use data sent through its API to train its models (per its API data usage policy).

Voice input

Voice input requires your AI consent and microphone permission. When you add a transaction by voice, the app records a short clip from the moment you tap the microphone until you tap again, and sends it to our server, which passes it to OpenAI's speech-to-text API (Whisper) for transcription only. The resulting text is then sent to OpenAI to turn it into a draft transaction that you review before saving. We do not store the recording on our servers or in our logs; only the transaction you confirm is saved. OpenAI does not use the audio to train its models.

Bank connection providers (Plaid, Monobank)

In the United States and Canada today, and in the United Kingdom and the European Union once bank sync launches there (coming soon), bank connections are made through Plaid: you sign in to your bank inside Plaid, and we receive a read-only access token plus your account, balance and transaction data. Plaid's service is provided by Plaid Inc. (United States), Plaid Financial Ltd. (United Kingdom) and Plaid B.V. (European Union). In Ukraine, we connect to Monobank's official API with a read-only token you provide. Before you connect a bank, we may ask you to confirm it's you with a one-time code sent to your email (see section 6). Access tokens are encrypted at rest with AES-256-CBC and are never stored in plain text. We never receive your bank username or password, and no connection can move money. Outside these regions no bank is connected; you enter data manually or import a statement.

Plaid's own handling of your data is described in the Plaid End User Privacy Policy.

Apple and Google (sign-in & in-app purchases)

If you sign in with Apple or Google, your account identifier is used for authentication only. Subscriptions and purchases are processed by the App Store or Google Play; we verify receipts with their servers to confirm your plan and store the transaction ID for subscription management. We never receive your card details.

Analytics, crash reporting and ad measurement (Google, Meta)

The app uses Google Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics for product analytics and crash reports, and the Meta App Events SDK to attribute app installs and subscriptions to our ads. These services receive pseudonymous identifiers, device information and app events. They never receive your bank credentials, balances or transactions. On this website, Google Analytics (GA4) runs only if you choose "Allow analytics" in the cookie banner, and Vercel Web Analytics measures aggregate page views without cookies.

How to opt out: turn off Settings → Privacy → Share usage data in the app to stop Firebase Analytics and Crashlytics. On iOS, Meta can use your advertising identifier only if you tap "Allow" in Apple's App Tracking Transparency prompt; you can change this at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. On Android, you can reset or delete your advertising ID in your device settings. On the website, choose "Essential only" in the cookie banner.

Email (SMTP provider and Resend)

We send transactional emails (verification codes, password resets, account deletion confirmations) through an SMTP email provider, and waitlist emails through Resend. Your email address and the message content are the only personal data transmitted. We do not send marketing emails without your consent, and our transactional emails contain no tracking pixels or external resources.

5. Service Providers (Sub-processors)

These companies process personal data on our behalf so we can run Clario:

  • Google Cloud: our servers (Cloud Run), database hosting (Cloud SQL), secret storage and logs. All service data. United States.
  • Plaid: bank connections in the US and Canada today (UK and EU coming soon), provided by Plaid Inc. (United States), Plaid Financial Ltd. (United Kingdom) and Plaid B.V. (European Union). Bank account and transaction data.
  • Monobank: bank connection in Ukraine. Bank account and transaction data.
  • OpenAI: Clario AI answers, insights, chat summaries, AI memory, receipt scanning and voice transcription, only after your explicit consent. The financial context each request needs, your chat messages and saved memory facts, receipt images and voice recordings.
  • Apple: Sign in with Apple, App Store purchases and push notifications. Apple user ID, purchase transactions, device token.
  • Google: Google Sign-In, Google Play Billing, Firebase Cloud Messaging, Firebase Analytics, Crashlytics and Google Analytics. Google user ID, purchases, device token, pseudonymous analytics and crash data.
  • Meta: App Events SDK for ad install attribution. App install, app open and purchase events. No financial data.
  • SMTP email provider and Resend: transactional and waitlist email. Email address and message content.
  • Vercel: website hosting and cookieless web analytics. Website traffic.

Where your data is stored: our servers and database run on Google Cloud (United States), and your data is stored in an encrypted, managed PostgreSQL database (Cloud SQL). Some of the providers above may process data in other countries under their own safeguards.

6. Data Security

We take the security of your financial data seriously and use the following measures:

  • Bank access tokens (Plaid, Monobank) and Sign in with Apple tokens are encrypted by us with AES-256-CBC and an HMAC-SHA256 integrity check before they are stored. Encryption and HMAC use separate keys.
  • Passwords are hashed with bcrypt (12 rounds). They cannot be reversed or read by anyone, including us.
  • Email verification codes are hashed with SHA-256 before storage and expire after 10 minutes.
  • Before you connect a bank, we may ask you to confirm it's you with a one-time 6-digit code sent to your email (or a fresh Sign in with Apple or Google). We store only a keyed hash (HMAC-SHA256) of the code, never the code itself. It expires after 10 minutes and allows at most 5 attempts.
  • All connections to our API use HTTPS with TLS 1.2 or later, and plain HTTP is redirected to HTTPS. The iOS app enforces Apple's App Transport Security. Connections between our servers and the database are encrypted.
  • Our database is encrypted at rest by our hosting provider (AES-256).
  • Sessions use signed tokens. Signing out removes the session from your device and revokes its refresh token, and deleting your account invalidates all of its sessions immediately. In the app, session tokens are stored in the iOS Keychain or Android Keystore; on the website, session cookies are Secure, HTTP-only and SameSite=Strict.
  • Access to production systems and customer data is limited to Clario's founder, for operations and support only.

No system is perfectly secure. If a security incident affects your data, we will notify you and any affected partner within 72 hours of confirming it, and notify regulators where the law requires.

7. Cookies and Similar Technologies

On our website, strictly necessary cookies keep you signed in to the web dashboard (Secure, HTTP-only, SameSite=Strict session cookies), protect forms against cross-site request forgery and remember your language. They are not used for advertising.

Google Analytics loads on the website only if you choose "Allow analytics" in the cookie banner. It then sets Google Analytics cookies (for example _ga) to measure visits, with IP anonymization turned on. We also use Vercel Web Analytics and Speed Insights, which measure aggregate page views and performance without cookies. We do not use advertising cookies on the website.

The mobile app does not use cookies, but it does use the analytics, crash reporting and ad measurement SDKs described in section 4. See our Cookie Policy for the full list of website cookies.

8. Data Retention

We keep your data only for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service:

  • Account and financial data: kept while your account is active. When you delete your account, we remove your Plaid bank connections at Plaid and permanently delete your account and financial data from our production database straight away.
  • Chat history, chat summaries and AI memory facts: kept until you delete the chat or the fact, clear your AI memory, or delete your account.
  • Backups and logs: encrypted database backups age out within 14 days, and server logs within 30 days.
  • Pseudonymous analytics events (keyed by a random ID, with no name or email): kept for up to 24 months.
  • Email verification codes and bank-connection security codes: expire after 10 minutes, and expired security-code records are deleted within a day. Rate-limiting records expire after 15 minutes.
  • Collaborative jar share codes: expire after 5 minutes.

9. Your Rights

Under GDPR and Ukrainian data protection law, you have the following rights:

  • Right of access: Request a copy of all personal data we hold about you.
  • Right to rectification: Request correction of inaccurate personal data.
  • Right to erasure: Delete your account and all associated data at any time from within the app (Settings → Delete Account). Your data is permanently removed from our production database; encrypted backups age out within 14 days.
  • Right to data portability: Request your data in a machine-readable format (available to Pro subscribers via the Export feature, or by email for everyone). The in-app export does not yet include chat history or AI memory facts; email support@clarioapp.net and we will send them to you.
  • Right to object: Object to processing of your data for specific purposes.
  • Right to withdraw consent: Withdraw your AI consent in Settings, or switch off and clear AI memory in Settings → AI memory, at any time. This does not affect processing that took place before you withdrew it.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at support@clarioapp.net. We will respond within 30 days.

10. Children's Privacy

Clario is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us at support@clarioapp.net and we will promptly delete it.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy in the app and on our website, with the updated effective date. Your continued use of Clario after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
